Project SummaryDana StreetSan Luis Obispo, CA Tucked along the banks of San Luis Obispo Creek, this two-unit property on Dana Street was reimagined to preserve its historic charm while introducing modern livability. Originally constructed in the 1920s, the building's layout and structure were left largely intact, but the interior and exterior were fully renovated to reflect a softer, more contemporary sensibility. The project included restoring original hardwood floors, adding new kitchen and laundry layouts, and upgrading both bathrooms — including the retention and refinishing of the existing clawfoot tubs. Light-touch interventions like built-in shelving, layered window treatments, and updated lighting helped to brighten the interior and increase functionality. Outside, we introduced a terraced wood deck, a new perimeter fence system, and a pedestrian-friendly entry courtyard. A shared stone seating area near the creek wall allows both units to enjoy the site's unique relationship to the natural environment, just a few blocks from downtown. This renovation prioritized balance — between the old and new, privacy and connection, structure and setting — and demonstrates how architectural restraint can enhance daily living. Project Highlights
Design NotesThis was a study in architectural restraint. The footprint was left intact, and the majority of the interventions were material or surface-based. We leaned on texture—wood, plaster, tile, and linen—to add depth and softness. Outdoors, we prioritized social connection, creating space for quiet retreat as well as shared gathering. While the property is only a few blocks from downtown, the creek provides a natural boundary that informed the spatial organization of decks, plantings, and privacy transitions. Testimonial"I can’t believe how much better the place lives now. We didn’t have to tear anything down — just thoughtful updates made the space feel completely different. It’s still our same home, just… better.”
